The location
The EBRD's headquarters is at Five Bank Street in Canary Wharf, a 26-storey building in which the EBRD occupies the top 13 floors and Société Générale leases the lower storeys.
Canary Wharf is one of the UK's two international financial centres, alongside the City of London. It offers residential, commercial, lifestyle, and retail facilities with world-class infrastructure. The area has a daily working population of 120,000, with 150 major office tenants, over 300 shops, bars, and restaurants, and 20 acres of outdoor space.
Background
The EBRD moved its headquarters to Canary Wharf in 2022 after its lease at One Exchange Square expired. Remaining at One Exchange Square, where the Bank had been since 1993, would have required extensive refurbishment, disrupting staff and operations. After thorough due diligence, Five Bank Street was chosen as our new headquarters. This world-class building offers excellent facilities, reflects the Bank’s commitment to sustainability and reinforces our commitment to London.
Our previous headquarters
From 1992 to 2022, the EBRD was headquartered at One Exchange Square in London, near Liverpool Street Station. The 12-storey building featured a blend of modern architecture and classical proportions, ensuring easy maintenance and energy efficiency.
After its inauguration in April 1991, after months of searching for a suitable headquarters, the EBRD chose this location to reflect its modern, forward-looking, and efficient image. The building was large and flexible enough for future expansion and met the commuting needs of staff.
Before moving to One Exchange Square in 1992, the EBRD was temporarily housed at 6 Broadgate and then 122 Leadenhall, which was damaged by a bomb in April 1992.
Art and exhibitions
The EBRD marked its 35-year anniversary in 2026 by establishing a permanent historical exhibition in the lobby of the Bank’s headquarters in London. The display, which will evolve over time, presents a visual narrative of the Bank’s journey and impact, from its origins after the collapse of communism in Europe through to the present day and its expansion into new regions. One of the current exhibition highlights is a special feature on the EBRD’s role in international efforts to make Chornobyl safe, marking 40 years since the 1986 disaster.
The EBRD's former headquarters housed several art works in keeping with its international character. Outside the Board Room stood a wooden articulated winged horse created by Christian Renonciat, which has now been moved to the new headquarters at Five Bank Street in Canary Wharf. Other works included tributes to Leonardo da Vinci and Nicolas Copernicus. A large metal sphere in the Bishopsgate reception area symbolised a world without frontiers.
Resident Offices
One of the EBRD’s strengths is its on-the-ground connection with its countries of operation. Proximity to clients, deep local expertise and strong client relationships have always set the Bank apart.
Since its earliest days the EBRD has extended its direct presence in the countries where its projects are located. It has opened Resident Offices in most of the locations where we invest. Increasingly staff from EBRD headquarters in London have moved to these country offices, while new staff have also been recruited locally.
To enhance its impact and agility for countries and clients, the EBRD has begun establishing Regional Client Delivery Hubs in Almaty, Belgrade, Cairo, Istanbul, Kyiv, Nairobi and Warsaw. This will allow the Bank to bring its leadership and expertise closer to its clients, strengthen its ability to deliver at scale – including in wartime Ukraine – and support it in becoming a more mobile and resilient organisation.
The opening of the Tech Sofia hub in 2026 also supports the Bank’s aim of deepening engagement with local clients and partners – as well as an intention to grow its operational footprint in Bulgaria. Tech Sofia will bolster the EBRD’s capability and capacity to deliver technology effectively, in line with the Bank’s transformation agenda. It will support colleagues across our regions by serving as a centre for technological excellence, with a focus on cloud, software development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
